Harlem Village Academies

Harlem Village Academies is a community of educators working to build an urban school district based on the ideals and tenets of progressive education. Based in Harlem, HVA is also the demonstration site for the Progressive Education Institute.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Today in Harlem and other disadvantaged areas, only 8 of 100 children born into poverty will graduate from college. This social injustice is a moral outrage. 

Harlem Village Academies is widely recognized as a leader at the forefront of public education, ranking among the highest performing school networks in the country, with 95% high school graduation and a consistent track record of performance. After a decade of running five public schools serving nearly 2,000 students, HVA aspires to impact public education nationally by creating a Graduate School of Education with a campus in Harlem and an innovative digital platform. 

Our vision is to build an enduring American institution that will produce the most inspiring and effective educators, immersed in sophisticated pedagogy while driven by a sense of urgency and accountability. We aim to transform the way teachers are trained, particularly those serving our nation’s most vulnerable children. Our Harlem campus will become a vibrant learning community of graduate students, aspiring young teachers, experienced master teachers, graduate school faculty, and HVA students in Kindergarten through 12 grade. The organization now seeks an accomplished Director of Individual Giving to grow and steward a portfolio of passionately supportive major donors. 

The Director of Individual Giving will play a key role in fulfilling HVA’s vision by managing and growing the organization’s major gifts revenue. The Director will serve as a close partner to the Managing Director of Institutional Advancement. Uniquely, this is a chance to combine fundraising in a high-performing existing organization, with the thrill and challenge of a start-up. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Cultivate and solicit donors in the five- to seven-figure range 
  • Secure event leadership and honorees for HVA’s annual benefit
  • Create and steward deep, long-lasting relationships with prospective and current major donors
  • Build relationships with major donors, coordinate communications and generate continued and increased support for fundraising initiatives
  • Work collaboratively with the development team on cultivation events throughout the year

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
The ideal candidate will be a highly intelligent, driven individual with a passion for education and a track record of success in cultivating and stewarding a portfolio of investors or donors. He or she will be extraordinarily gracious and professional, with a high level of comfort interfacing with CEOs, corporate executives and high net worth individuals. 

HVA will strongly consider qualified candidates who have relevant experience in major gift fundraising as well as related fields such as investor relations, sales, wealth management, or business development.  In addition he or she will have the following qualities and skills:
  • At least five to seven years successful experience cultivating deep relationships with major donors or investors
  • Demonstrated success increasing the number of donors and/or investors in a portfolio of prospects, as well as  the scale of contributions 
  • Highly self-motivated to set, pursue and achieve ambitious goals, while meeting deadlines and attending to details
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to communicate a compelling message to various constituencies 
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and comfortable with exceptionally high standards
  • Deeply committed to mission;  willing to be hands-on 
  • Adept at managing and following through on multiple projects at once, under deadlines

COMPENSATION:
Competitive compensation commensurate with experience.
